Michigan St. 75 Oakland 71

By Brian

Oh, so close.  The Grizzlies nearly found a way to pull off the upset, but Michigan State held on for a 75 – 71 victory.  I hate to say I’m disappointed, as my expectations for this game were tempered by Tuesday’s less-than-enthralling loss to Duquesne at home, but it’s difficult not to feel as though an opportunity slipped away at the Breslin Center.

The Spartans are clearly not playing as well as they could be and they left the door open for a Grizzlies triumph.  However, MSU did what good teams — especially elite level programs — do, they won when they didn’t bring their “A” game.

Brandon Cassise’s 20 led the way for OU.  Derick Nelson continued to post All-America caliber numbers with 19 points and 9 boards.  Johnathon Jones managed 10 points on a 4 of 16 night from the field, but countered with seven assists and no turnovers.  Jones also played some very tough defense on MSU All-America Drew Neitzel.

Raymar Morgan’s 20 led the Spartans.  Goran Suton had 15 points, but 20 rebounds including 11 offensive boards.  Neitzel had six assists.

I’m still proud of the effort OU displayed.  For a young team to play that well on the road after suffering such a big loss at home just days before, I’ll take a four point loss to a potential Final Four squad.

Next up is Xavier.  Another difficult road game.  If OU can play like they did this afternoon, the Grizzlies can beat the Musketeers.  Now, will they play that well again?  I guess we will find out next week.  Go Grizzlies!
